LINK Lab at CSCL in Gothenburg, Sweden

George Siemens and Matt Crosslin attended "Exploring the Material Conditions of Learning": The 11th International Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning in Gothenburg, Sweden, June 7-11, 2015.

  1. Matt had a great view of Toronto on the way to the conference.
  2. The opening keynote by Steve Woolgar on "Narratives of Mundane Governance" raised some interesting questions.
  3. "Narratives of Mundane Governance" - much more outrage against the mundane things the government monitor #cscl2015
  4. McOntology - individuals not taking responsibility for their irresponsibility but changing the ontological narrative #cscl2015
  5. "Not about teaching people to drive, but reeducating drivers' minds" mundane and unknowingly redundant as well #cscl2015
  6. Then Matt got out and tried to walk off some jet lag.
  7. The great thing about Gothenburg is that many of the streets have tree-lined walk/bike trails right down the middle. http://t.co/2cOyTzCTQl

  8. But on the flip side, jet lag is kicking me in the teeth. Even chugged a DP (sugar+caffeine) and my jet lagged laughed maniacally.
  9. The next day was off to a good start.
  10. If you can judge a culture by the breakfast buffet at one hotel, Sweden gets two big thumbs up! #cscl2015
  11. I sometimes wonder if people at conference MOOC sessions know that @gsiemens is sitting in the audience... at a computer... ready to Tweet..
  12. The session that George and Matt were a part of - "Challenges and Opportunities of Dual-Layer MOOCs" - generated some good interest and conversation on Twitter.
  13. Help us to rethink MOOCs in our interactive event on "Challenges and Opportunities of Dual-Layer MOOCs" at 3.30 in B1 114 @CSCL2015
  14. Meaningful conversation still occurred when students didn't know they were chatting with an automated program in #dalmooc #cscl2015
  15. Full house at our interactive event on "Challenges and Opportunities of Dual-Layer MOOCs" @CSCL2015 #CSCL2015 http://t.co/k5vQmiZQRu

  16. So, @grandeped adjusted quickly to a sudden presentation responsibility that was thoroughly planned about 30 seconds before :) #cscl15
  17. @gsiemens I thought we had at least 45-50 seconds like the pros.
  18. @mediendidaktik @dgasevic the two "layers" (modes) we had were instructivism and connectivism. #cscl2015
  19. We say "good design does this" often without taking into account how grades, instructor presence, etc affect results #cscl2015
  20. Great interactive session hosted by @danceedxopen at #cscl2015 on supporting social learning in MOOCs.
  21. The big question we need to ask is: do we want to continue teaching what to learn, or shift to teaching how to learn? #heutagogy #cscl2015
  22. This was the view we had of most of the key notes - have to show up early!
  23. The next day started with our regular coffee shop session with George, Dragan, and who ever else they invited to join us. This particular session was with Piotr of EdX.
  24. Fun watching @gsiemens and @dgasevic debate instructivism vs connectivism with Pior from EdX :)
  25. George was part of a panel on "Learning Analytics of and in Meditational Processes of Collaborative Learning" that generated a lot of interest.
  26. #cscl2015 nice session #learninganalytics nice examples and also reflective about what is needed, e.g. theories that give meaning to data
  27. Siemens: We are making progress on computational/analysis part, but need frameworks to know what’s happening #cscl2015 #learninganalytics
  28. @gsiemens "With learning #analytics it feels like we are entering the second age of behaviorism." #cscl2015
  29. Siemens: We need to think more about the humans that are in the space & cultural factors that impact decisions #cscl2015 #learninganalytics
  30. “Worry: The more we talk about #analytics, the more I’m feeling we're moving to the 2nd behaviorism age.” - @gsiemens #cscl2015
  31. #cscl2015 @gsiemens emphasizes "not to develop into a second age of behaviourism when it comes to #learninganalytics
  32. .@gsiemens: We need to think very seriously about privacy concerns as we begin to collect more data (& types) #cscl2015 #learninganalytics
  33. @gsiemens Once we have all these (biometric) sensor data added to #learninganalytics, is this really the future we want? #cscl2015
  34. #cscl2015 George Siemens: why are we doing #learninganalytics ?motivation behind it leads to other trajectories
  35. There was also time for exploring, interacting, and posting random thoughts.
  36. Me after scaling the Skansen Kronan. Which I think is Swedish for "Big Calf-Killing Hill." #cscl2015 http://t.co/yQTWkLKn8Z

  37. Ask not what dropouts mean for MOOCs, but what MOOCs mean for dropouts. #cscl2015
  38. George was also part of the "Grand Challenges in Technology-Enhanced Learning" session.
  39. We are kicking of #csclchallenge at #cscl2015. What are the grand challenges that learning researchers face in different communities?
  40. #csclchallenge I am thankful that #cscl2015 is a gender-balanced community; maybe we can tick that box. http://t.co/WcWMIiyaCE

  41. . @gsiemens: "What does it mean to be human in a much more technological society?" #CSCL2015
  42. speaker on #csclchallenge invokes eudaimonia (feeling and living well) in relation to #learninganalytics #cscl2015
  43. Technology as an invasive species? by @tophe (an ecological metaphor) #cscl2015 #csclchallenge
  44. @gsiemens @tophe New technological practices may B invasive species; what R the keystone species in the ecology? #csclchallenge #cscl2015
  45. And finally it was time to wrap up, summarize, and head home.
  46. Great time in Sweden at #cscl2015 (even though I woke up really sick today, I'll live). Starting the long trek home.
  47. Thanks for the conference #cscl2015 folks. Now at Gothenburg airport. Heading to Stockholm for #ScMC15
  48. @gsiemens at some point you should just organize a whole conference at a series of street cafes where people just sit, drink, and discuss.
